These are quite unlike anything else on the couplings market. The major feature is that they are self-contained so they do not require a magnet under the track to uncouple. A tiny magnet is instead located on each coupling hook. To uncouple, the coupling must be in tension. The vehicles are gently moved together until the hook drops and then the vehicles can be pulled apart.

When I tested these, it took quite a bit of getting used to. I could not understand how a rake of wagons could possibly be split in the middle. It is not easy but requires practice. A prerequisite is for locos that run smoothly and very slowly otherwise you will lack the necessary control. Like most couplings, they must be fitted at a consistent height above the rails; I found that a bit difficult.

The Gauge O Guild tested these successfully on curves down to 1220mm/48” so the equivalent in 4mm scale will be 700mm/28”. I guess that is for successful running; I suspect the coupling and uncoupling minimum radii will be considerably greater.

The big disadvantage for me is that the hook is bulky. It is not only visually intrusive but so large that it is impossible to fit onto many 4mm scale tank locos. Even the Bachmann 97xx pannier needs major surgery to fit. The loop by contrast, is easy to fit. A jig can be made to shape the loop to fit into a standard NEM pocket; unfortunately you have to make your own. The coupling is also handed; locos cannot be turned.

If you want a shunting puzzle layout and the loco(s) you propose have plenty of flat space behind the buffer beam, then using these couplings does away with the need for electro-magnets and, more importantly, should be good fun to operate.

These couplings deserve to be more widely known so my old instructions are attached (with the permission of the manufacturer) for anyone wishing to know more. Note the price is out of date; they are £11.00 for a pack for 6 vehicles plus post.
