I haven’t been able to find any reported experiences of an EM conversion.

Not having purchased any fairly recent Hornby products, I wonder if anyone can confirm whether it is similar to any other locos where conversion sheets exist, say the 08?

It seems to be of a different design to the 0-4-0 DH version, but I wonder if the wheelsets are the same?

        Thanks

It might be that no-one has done one yet. Please consider doing one and writing-up a Manual Sheet for others to follow.

I didn’t wish to re-invent the wheel, but was surprised to find a number of accounts relating to the 4 wheel versions and none to the 6 wheel.

In some respects it looks as though conversion might be easier than for the 4wDH model.

The valance forms part of the cast metal footplate and the outside frames including the brake hangers are secured to the chassis with small screws at either end. They are thick enough to permit some thinning behind the axle guards and there is up to 2mm clearance to move them out, although the securing screws are quite short. Very slight trimming of the end springs might be needed.

The wheels are 14mm diameter with 1mm flanges on 2mm axles with flats on the ends. Clearance between the frames is 21.46mm and the wheels are 2.5 mm thick plus substantial bosses on front and back. I am far from expert on conversion, but there would appear to be sufficient space for conversion and possible re-use of the Hornby wheels with some fettling.

I am, however, not likely to be doing so in the near future. The purchase was not planned but made in lieu of a model ‘bought’ on-line that was not in stock (apparently delay in reconciliation in the software). It was hoped that with the fairly substantial body it would be readily convertible to battery on board radio control. However, the helpfully small motor is unhelpfully positioned under the long bonnet and the rear part of the underframe is solid metal. Whilst this could be cut out, it is the location for the centrally positioned screws that secure the small bonnet, control desk and long bonnet. A modified or alternative body, or a dummy wagon load for the battery, perhaps?

In other respects it is a nice model, although the thin self coloured plastic side sheets are translucent in strong light.
