ParticipantUp to now, I’ve always been a diesel modeller; in fact, my current fleet consists entirely of SLW Class 24s, which are a doddle to EM-ify. But I’ve recently developed an interest in industrial steam locos, and my local model shop has a couple of the Hornby Peckett W4s in stock that I’m rather taken by. Since they’d look grand on my next little project, I was wondering if anyone had converted one, and if so how difficult it was. I can’t seem to find any conversion packs online for this loco, which I thought odd, as it has been around for a few years now and by all accounts has been very popular.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated before I cross the divide into the world of Steam!

ParticipantHi Andrew,
I can’t say that I’ve heard of an EM conversions of the Hornby Peckett.
In P4, the route has been to use the replacement chassis designed by a friend of mine in the BS4 Scalefour group. It does include EM spacers, although whether any have been built to that standard I don’t know.
The thread about the kit is here: EM/P4 Peckett on Scalefour Society Forum.
There is also a topic about it on RMWeb. There might be some EM discussion there.

ParticipantThere have also been 3D printed Peckett wheel centres by a splendid chap whose name I can’t be certain of now, is it David Lane? They are designed to fit Gibson wagon wheel tyres, fractionally under size but not much. I will dig out his details if anyone is interested.

ParticipantThanks guys; not sure I’m up for a chassis replacement, but I like the idea of those 3D wheel centres pushed into a finescale tyre. I did find an image on the 70s EM Gauge website of one that’s been converted:
https://www.emgauge70s.co.uk/model_omwb127.html
…although this looks like it’s used the original wheels, with the cylinders having undergone some surgery to push them out somewhat. I wonder if that would still be necessary with finer wheels?

Participant<p style=”text-align: left;”>Yes that’s him. The Gibson wagon tyre is particularly fine in the context of a loco so might make it all fit ok. He can make them with 1/8″ or 2mm axle – 2mm might suit the Peckett?</p>

ParticipantI have another to do, also with the same etched chassis kit, and I have a B2 which I shall scratchbuild a chassis for.

ParticipantHere’s a set of David Lane’s wheels, fitted into Gibson tyres. These are for a 2mm axle as I thought it would suit the small wheel rather better, and David was happy to oblige. I don’t know the axle size of the Hornby loco though, for anyone contemplating a simple conversion. The very fine Gibson wagon tyres ought to help fit it all in behind the slidebars, with luck!
Giles – please post pictures of these loco’s, when built !
