For my proposed layout I am going to need a GWR 44xx locomotive and so far as I can see, the only option is the Malcolm Mitchell kit. Iain Rice in his excellent “Etched Loco CPnstruction” gives the 44xx as an example of a very well designed kit and describes it as being suitable for a beginner. I was heartened to read this, but now can’t figure out if the kit is still available and if so where I might buy it from.

I gain the impression that some of the Malcolm Mitchell designed kits were sold to Phoenix Precision Paints back in 2014, but they only list the 45xx on their web site.

Does anyone happen to know if the 44xx is available from somewhere or suggest an alternative source for a model of this class. Clearly, I can keep my eyes open for a second hand loco, but I would prefer if the main loco on the layout had been built by me.

You can also get an old K’s kit, and put a new chassis, motor and wheels. May not be as exquisite as a brass version, but quite passable if made up well. They crop up regularly on eBay.

            Hi Richard
David Geen used to sell the Michell kits, don’t know if that included the 44xx but he has retired now so don’t know what’s happened to the range, hopefully it will reappear at some stage
I bought and made the 44xx years ago soon after it came out and it indeed makes a fine loco, mine has a portescap motor and ultrascale wheels and runs superbly. Unfortunately it doesn’t fit in with my current layout under construction as it is based in London, but wouldn’t dream of parting with it
None of above is of much help to you but if you manage to get hold of the Mitchell kit don’t hesitate
            Regards

              Hi Michael,
Thank you for your helpful response and I wonder if I could be a bit cheeky and ask for some additional assistance?
If you look on eBay at the moment you will find one of the Malcolm Mitchell kits for sale (see link below). Unfortunately, it isn’t clear if the kit is complete and it certainly seems that a start has been made on at least on component. It also might not have full instructions.

Would you be able to have a look at the eBay photos and tell me whether, from your experience, it looks like everything might be there? I certainly can’t see a boiler tube. Does this come in the etch and need rolling? Unfortunately, the seller hasn’t spread out the etches before photographing them (suspicious?) but I guess I could send him a message and ask if he could.

If it turns out that the kit is complete but doesn’t have full instructions then might you be able to send me a copy of your instructions?

Feel free to respond via email at emgs@huskydog.org.uk to avoid cluttering up the forum with a one to one conversation.

              Thanks,

              Richard

Good God, you’re right. There’s one on there right now. Definitely a possibility if an etched one can’t be found.

Just for the benefit of any other members who may be interested in the Malcolm Mitchell 44xx kit being sold on eBay with EM wheels by fentiger2878. It turns out that only the etches for the body are present – the two nickel silver chassis etches are missing. I have informed the seller, but he doesn’t seem keen to mention this in his listing!
