ParticipantHello all,
I’m a brand new convert to EM from OO, and have just received some of the Society’s flexitrack. Perhaps there’s an obvious reason for this, but if so I’m missing it – why is there quite a lot of spare rail projecting beyond the sleepers at each end of the length of track?
Regards
Graham

Paul TomlinsonParticipantGraham, Hi. You may be interested in reading the Newsletter that heralded the introduction of the track – link below. The reason for the spare rail is that the track has been designed to create prototypical 60ft panels, which don’t fit neatly into the yard/metre length of the standard rail.

Trade OfficerKeymasterHi Graham
Early on we did realise that some members may want to utilise the additional rail rather than stick to prototype 60ft panels. We stock the half panel track bed in packs of 5 to enable the additional lengths to be used. One half panel is sufficient for 1 length of track.
Hope that helps

ParticipantThank you John, that is helpful. I’ve identified the panel end sleepers (with the help of a magnifying glass!) Am I right to think that I should fit a dummy fishplate at each of those? i.e. every 60 feet.

Trade OfficerKeymasterThat was the intention if you wanted to work in that sort 0f detail. The intention was to be something for everyone from an easy and quick way of getting track laid up to members who detail their track. And yes the are small, but they don’t stand out when laid
good luck with your layout

ParticipantThanks again John. My magnifying glass comment was aimed at the printed text on the underside of the sleepers! There was a day when I could have happily read it unaided…
