I’m very tempted by a Bachmann Earl/Dukedog but has anyone successfully converted it to EM? Any bright ideas?

I guess the best option for you on this is the Alan Gibson website. They sell the appropriate wheels and iirc have a ‘how to’ pff as well. I’ll be going down this route at some stage.

The Gibson conversion pack does the job – almost. I actually used Ultrascale wheels. The Gibson plastic outside cranks are very brittle and are likely to break when fitting or sometime afterwards. I have not yet found anything better. The Bachmann coupling rods are not very good and ideally I would replace them. I have not yet found a source of straight, fluted rods. I think it needs more weight on the rear of the loco so I intend to modify the tender so it is supported on the back axle and the drawbar, with the other two tender axles converted to a bogie, not supporting the tender. The dodge vastly improves the running of tender locos, but takes a while to do and I shall lose the pickups on the two tender axles. It’s on my to-do list and conversion is worth the effort.
