The important thing with these is that there needs to be a little slack in the mesh, so you should be able to rock the wheel back and forth slightly against the worm. If they are metal gears then a short run in both directions soaked in Brasso will help them run more smoothly too. Slightly boring because you’ll then need to clean them thoroughly before adding lubricant.
