Hi Richard, yes as you say it can be done, I would say though that the original springs used by Alan Gibson were too stiff and after a discussion with Alan at a show he sent me some much lighter springs to try which were then used in the plunger pickups so I think that’s where a few people got the ‘hump’ with the original plunger pickups. I’ve used them on many many locos for exhibition use over the years since then including locos built for customers which as far as I know are still performing well. Colin Seamour who now has Gibson still does the pickups with the lighter springs but beware picking up pre owned packs.
Torque reaction arm, If the motor is vertical then the motor screw is ideal to mount a tag washer with an arm of 0.9mm wire soldered to it and fitted through the wee bracket seen on the previous post. I build the chassis so that the wheels can drop out and this arrangement allows that by being able to undo the 2mm screw to remove the arm, the other two screws 1.4mm hold the motor to the gearbox so you don’t move the gear mesh.
