If you are considering scratch building a gearbox. Not only is the height of the worm over the gear wheel critical, but you must make sure the worm is Exactly 90 degrees to the gear wheel/axle also over the centre as any deviation and the worm will act like a gear milling cutter against the gear wheel teeth.
