For a bit of fun, I’m making a working self-propelled ‘steam crane’ such as you’d find at a factory or harbour in EM. I don’t particularly need one, but it’s a nice exercise.
An 8mm diameter 4 way slipring is to be used to supply power to the truck and give 360 degree rotation, with ateeny 6mm diameter gearmotor for traction. N20 Gearmotors will be used for hoists and slew.
Eventually a Deltang receiver with do the biz internally, with a 700mAh Lipo providing power

That looks very impressive, I’m looking forward to seeing that in action!

Likewise. Mentioning harbours, I think they’re ideal for a cameo layout. I enjoyed visiting the real M Shed at Bristol (with it’s travelling crane) and here’s a very nice replica in EM : https://bristolharbourrailway.co.uk/2017/03/12/m-shed-in-miniature/

The body shell is almost there. It needs doors fitting, and the roof made to be practically removable (not only maintenance, but the ability to swap batteries over easily eould be useful).as you can see, it is tight for space…… and I need to put a bit of lead to the rear of the cabin to balance the jib. It will be a heavy little thing when in running order. The truck is already loaded with lead.

State of play at the moment……. all motors have tails wired, battery charging socket and on/off switch are wired, so awaiting receiver to finish wiring.
I always use an in-line resettable fuse (0.5A) for safeties sake. I’ve always bought them pre-wired thus far, but I recently bought some as components. This was a bit small to solder!

It’s finished now apart from any paint tidging I might do (a steel finish on the face of the dumb buffers for instance). It is jam packed internally. Wires take up so much space….. I had ordered the receiver configured for the F outputs to take an Add board to control the fourth motor, but it came without the F outputs wired, and I discovered that they weren’t configured either. No blame to Micron – Andy’s service has always been superb – he just forgot this one thing. However, it was a very dodgy thing soldering wires into the middle of the board rather than the edge, and not something I want to make a habit of! It took me a bit of a while to configure them correctly too, as I should have read further down the programming sheet! However, I got there in the end and all the bits work.

An interesting build, thanks for sharing. I like the workaday appearance you’ve given it – would it have a match truck to aid transport and allow that heavy jib to take a breather? Cheers.

Hi Paul
I suspect that a Yard or Harbour crane wouldn’t…. though doubtless there are exceptions! It would be interesting to know if they were in any way common on this sort of crane though…….
