Has anybody tried doing one of these using the society stub axle packs – ref: 59zy?
I have two of these which run quite well as “00” locomotives and so would like to convert at least one
I see in the stores there is a reference to the January 1998 Newsltter regarding the use of these stub axle assemblies – unfortunately I don’t go back that far with my Newsletters.
Any thoughts / help or if anybody could email me a copy of the Newsletter article would be greatly appreciated

There is a reference to part 59ZY in Newsletter 127 (February 1998). It is in the Trade News section and it seems this is intended to provide a 2mm split axle for bogie and pony wheels, so not what you need for a 57xx.
EMGS Manual 3,2,6 (8) covers the conversion of the later split-axle 57xx with 6mm axles (bushes part 59A3B). earlier examples including the Mainline ones have 5mm axles and these are covered in Manual 3.2.2 (0) sheets 3 and 4 (bush part 5920). The shorting frets can be used as with the 6mm bushes.
I haven’t checked the current stock position in EMGS stores, so I hope the relevant parts are still available.
I have to say my split-axle Mainline and Bachmann are fairly noisy, so if you have got them to be quiet I’d be pleased to hear your experience.

Hi Ray,
You do know that you can download copies of all the Newsletters from this website?
Just go to https://emgs.org/members-area/newsletters/
And then select what you need.
Best wishes,
Paul

Unfortunately the newsletters don’t go back that far as they would all need scanning.
However there is a Manual sheet available on the web site for that conversion. And I still have the items in stock

Hi Graham, i don’t know if you have tried Hob-E-Lube HL657 White Grease? It is a Woodland Scenic product that contains Teflon – it seems to help with smooth running and reduces noise – at least with plastic geared locos. I don’t think really quiet running is possible with these locos, there always seems to be some gear noise

Thanks Ray. I haven’t tried the Woodland Scenics product but I do use Carr’s Microgrease which claims to have a ‘flouro-silicone’ base; I suspect they are similar, though not sure where I would get more of the Carr’s product now. I would agree that spur drives are inherently noisy, and I suspect the earlier Mainline-engineered ones are worse than the later Bachmann with the large worm and the 6mm axles.
I see that the 5920 5mm bush has now disappeared from the Stores list. It was on sale some time ago. As John notes, the later 6mm bush and axle sets are still listed, and hopefully they are what you need.

Hi Graham – CARRS products are now stocked by Phoenix Precision paints. However because of the dangerous nature of some of the products they stock, postage can be quite pricey. The other option of course is to find their stand at an exhibition, although i think they now only go to about 4 a year

Ah, my mistake. I saw that they started going backwards, and assumed that the full history of the EMGS had been captured.
That is a shame, as I know from the one or two copies that I have picked up from other sources that there are some really helpful modelling articles in some of them.
Best,
Paul
