Hello everyone,
Just to reiterate John Wraggs’ comment that our website and email list has not been hacked. Data there is secure and compliant with legal requirements.
The issue of dodgy emails asking for help, money, gifts, or just simply confirmation that the email account still works, is down to hackers and covers all sorts of nefarious reasons – and we’ve all received most of them over the years!
The hacking tends mostly to be prevalent on the big ‘common or garden’ email providers, like yahoo, btinternet, hotmail, etc.,
EMGS officers all have fredbloggsxx@emgs.org addresses which are on a much more secure server than any of the above, and are least likely to be hacked (we believe – fingers crossed).
We encourage EMGS Officers use these for all formal EMGS business, however from time to time personal email addresses do get used by officers for purely practical access reasons (Remember we are only ‘human’ at the end of the day!).
The onus is on everybody, everywhere, to be mindful themselves of receiving potential dodgy emails and ignore them, but again we are all only human and can sometimes be easily duped!
Our membership secretary Michael Spearing has since changed his personal email address, should his previous one have been compromised in some way, which led to the spurious ones.
Members wishing to contact the Membership Secretary are encouraged to use membership@emgs.org
Regards
Steve Flint
EMGS Chairman
