    I think the 16.7mm back-to-back thing dates back to when the track gauge was widened from 18.0mm to 18.2mm, with the then back-to-back remaining unchanged, despite the check guage increasing.  If I’m wrong, I’m sure there will be someone who knows.

    I use the Society back-to-back guage, but with a slightly slack fit, so I’m probably at 16.7mm.
